August Activities

I really suck at blogging. I have this great idea to start again and then life gets in the way. However, today I am sitting in our little getaway and my husband is sick with the flu. Yikes, the flu in August….not a great start to the month. So it’s me, the two dogs and high humidity outside. I’ve cleaned as much as I can and so here it goes. Perhaps I need a goal sheet to keep blogging. During the month of July I had some time to start canning.

I made my traditional dill pickles, blueberry jam with thyme, cherries in honey, and red pepper jelly. To be honest, the blueberry jam doesn’t really taste very blueberryish so I am not sure what I did wrong. The others are just fine!

In the past year I have been very interested in the self-reliance, homesteading, bushcraft movement and thought I would see what skills I already possess and what ones I need to learn. Turns out I need to learn alot. I guess Girl Guides was too long ago to actually remember anything! So I bought myself some tools (which I will share in another post) and started with trying to chop wood. After many attempts to chop and make my own kindling (called batoning) I succeeded just once. To say I was tired is an understatement. Exercise gurus always encourage people to “take the stairs” as a workout…..I say try chopping wood…… that will really test endurance and energy. However, there is a great feeling when you succeed at this, and especially if you are over 50!!

Doesn’t look like much but it was a work of art in my eyes!!!
